## How it is calculated

`Answer = number × percentage ÷ 100`

Per cent means "out of 100", so 20% of a number is that number multiplied by 20 and divided by 100. To increase a number by a percentage, add the answer to it; to decrease it, subtract the answer.

## Good to know

- To find 10% of a number, move the decimal point one place left. Halve that for 5%.
- A rise of 50% followed by a fall of 50% does not bring you back: you end up 25% lower.
- X% of Y is always the same as Y% of X, which can make mental maths easier.

## Common questions

### How do I find what percentage one number is of another?

Divide the first number by the second and multiply by 100. For example, 45 out of 60 is 45 ÷ 60 × 100 = 75%.

### How do I work out a percentage increase?

Subtract the old value from the new value, divide by the old value and multiply by 100. From 400 to 500 is 100 ÷ 400 × 100 = 25%.

### How do I convert a fraction to a percentage?

Divide the top number by the bottom number and multiply by 100. 3 out of 8 is 3 ÷ 8 × 100 = 37.5%.

### How do I calculate percentage of marks?

Divide the marks you scored by the total marks and multiply by 100. 432 out of 500 is 86.4%.
