## How it is calculated

`A = sum of M × (1 + r ÷ 4)^(months left ÷ 3) for every instalment`

M is the monthly deposit and r is the yearly rate as a decimal. Every instalment earns quarterly-compounded interest for the number of months it stays in the account, so the first deposit earns the most and the last earns the least.

Banks may round or time interest slightly differently, so treat this as a close estimate.

## Good to know

- An RD suits a short, definite goal where you cannot take market risk.
- Missing instalments can bring a penalty, so pick an amount you can pay every month.
- For goals many years away, compare the result with a SIP, which has more risk but may grow more.

## Common questions

### What is a recurring deposit?

A recurring deposit lets you put a fixed amount into the bank every month for a fixed period and earn interest at a rate fixed when you open it.

### Is RD interest taxable?

Yes. RD interest is added to your income and taxed at your slab rate.

### What is the difference between an RD and an FD?

In an FD you deposit one amount at the start. In an RD you deposit a fixed amount every month. Both pay a fixed rate.

### Can I close an RD before maturity?

Yes, most banks allow it, usually at a lower interest rate or with a small penalty.
