## How it is calculated

`New salary = current salary × (1 + hike % ÷ 100)`

The hike percentage is applied to your current salary. The monthly figures divide the yearly salary by 12. All figures are before income tax and other deductions, so the rise in your take-home pay will be smaller.

If your offer letter quotes CTC, remember that CTC includes items such as the employer's provident fund contribution that do not reach your bank account each month.

## Good to know

- Compare your hike with inflation: a hike below inflation is a pay cut in real terms.
- When changing jobs, compare take-home pay, not only CTC.
- Ask how much of the new CTC is fixed pay and how much is variable.

## Common questions

### How do I work out my hike percentage?

Subtract the old salary from the new salary, divide by the old salary and multiply by 100. From ₹6,00,000 to ₹6,60,000 is (60,000 ÷ 6,00,000) × 100 = 10%.

### Is the hike applied to CTC or take-home pay?

Companies normally apply the hike to CTC. Take-home pay rises by a smaller amount because tax and provident fund deductions also go up.

### What is a good salary hike?

It varies widely by industry, performance and year. A hike above the inflation rate means your buying power has grown.

### Why is my take-home rise smaller than my hike?

Higher pay can move part of your income into a higher tax slab, and provident fund deductions rise with basic pay, so take-home grows by less than the hike percentage.
