## How it is calculated

`SIP in year y = starting SIP × (1 + step-up)^(y − 1), each instalment growing at the monthly return`

The SIP amount stays the same for 12 months, then rises by the step-up percentage, and so on each year. Every instalment earns the monthly return for as long as it stays invested.

A step-up works well because your income usually rises too. The return is an assumption and is not guaranteed.

## Good to know

- Match the step-up to your expected pay rise so the SIP never feels heavier.
- Even a 5% step-up makes a visible difference over 15 to 20 years.
- Set the step-up to happen automatically. Most fund houses offer a top-up option.

## Common questions

### What is a step-up or top-up SIP?

It is a SIP where the monthly amount increases automatically by a fixed percentage or amount, usually once a year.

### How much step-up should I choose?

Many people match it to their expected yearly pay rise, for example 5% to 10%. Even a small step-up makes a large difference over 15 or 20 years.

### Is a step-up SIP better than a normal SIP?

It builds a larger amount because you invest more each year. It is only better if you can afford the rising instalments.

### Can I step up by a fixed amount instead of a percentage?

Yes. Most fund houses let you top up by a fixed rupee amount or a percentage. This calculator uses a percentage.
