How it is calculated

Price after discount = original price × (1 − discount ÷ 100)

The saving is the original price multiplied by the discount percentage. Subtract it from the original price to get what you pay.

Two discounts in a row do not add up. "50% + 20% off" means 20% off the already reduced price, which is 60% off in total, not 70%.

Good to know

  • Compare the final price, not the discount percentage: a bigger discount on a higher price can still cost more.
  • Stacked discounts multiply. They do not add.
  • Check whether delivery or other charges are added after the discount.

Common questions

How do I find the discount percentage from two prices?

Subtract the sale price from the original price, divide by the original price and multiply by 100. From ₹2,000 to ₹1,400 is 600 ÷ 2,000 × 100 = 30%.

Is GST charged before or after the discount?

GST is normally charged on the price after the discount shown on the invoice. Printed MRP already includes GST.

What does "flat 50% off" mean?

The same 50% is taken off every item in the offer, so you pay half the original price.

How do I calculate two discounts together?

Apply the first discount, then apply the second to the reduced price. 20% off and then 10% off ₹1,000 gives ₹720, which is 28% off in total.
