How it is calculated

A = P × (1 + r ÷ 4)^(4 × t)

P is the deposit, r is the yearly rate as a decimal and t is the tenure in years. This calculator uses quarterly compounding, which is what most Indian banks use for cumulative fixed deposits.

Interest earned on an FD is taxable according to your income tax slab, and banks deduct TDS when the interest crosses the limit set by the government.

Good to know

  • Compare rates across banks and tenures. Small finance banks and special tenures often pay more.
  • Senior citizens usually get a higher rate than the standard one.
  • Breaking an FD early normally brings a lower rate or a penalty, so pick a tenure you can hold.

Common questions

How is FD interest compounded?

Most banks in India compound interest every quarter on cumulative FDs. A few use monthly or yearly compounding, so the bank's figure can differ slightly from this one.

Is FD interest tax free?

No. FD interest is added to your income and taxed at your slab rate. Only the deposit in a 5-year tax-saver FD can qualify for a deduction under the old tax regime; its interest is still taxable.

What is the difference between cumulative and non-cumulative FDs?

A cumulative FD adds the interest back to the deposit and pays everything at maturity. A non-cumulative FD pays the interest out monthly, quarterly or yearly.

Is my money in a bank FD safe?

Deposits in banks are insured by DICGC up to ₹5 lakh per depositor per bank, including principal and interest.
