How it is calculated

EMI = P × r × (1 + r)^n ÷ ((1 + r)^n − 1)

P is the loan amount, r is the monthly interest rate and n is the number of months. Personal loans are unsecured, so their rates are higher than home or car loans and depend heavily on your credit score and income.

Compare the rate you are offered with the EMI here, and ask about processing fees and prepayment charges, which can add noticeably to the cost.

Good to know

  • Borrow only what you need: personal loans are among the costliest loans after credit cards.
  • A better credit score usually gets you a lower rate, so check your score before applying.
  • Add the processing fee to the interest when comparing offers. A low rate with a high fee can cost more.

Common questions

Why is the personal loan rate higher than a home loan rate?

There is no house or car backing the loan, so the lender takes more risk and charges a higher rate.

What is a flat rate, and is it the same as this?

No. A flat rate charges interest on the full loan amount for the whole tenure, which costs much more. This calculator uses the reducing-balance method. If you are quoted a flat rate, ask for the equivalent reducing rate.

How much personal loan can I get?

Lenders decide mainly from your monthly income, existing EMIs and credit score. They usually want all your EMIs together to stay within a set share of your income.

Can I prepay a personal loan?

Usually yes, often after a few EMIs and with a prepayment charge. The charge and conditions differ between lenders.
